Free Write

My topic was on “Portraying the Human Minds in Film”, the film I chose was "Temple Grandin". My thesis was "Based on recent research on autism and its treatments, I will argue that the portrayal of Temple Grandin in the TV movie “Temple Grandin” gives a largely accurate picture of the way real autistics think and cope in their world”. I discovered in my research an in-depth look at autism that I didn't really understand before, having a brother with autism I didn't really want to look into the disease because I didn't want to hear how bad it can get because it hurt enough to see my brother struggle. Seeing life through a true autistics eyes and being put into there mind was amazing and I am happy with my choice of switching to this topic last minute. The database I used the most was Gale Virtual Library because it has everything you need and all information that is understandable and clear.

Final Reflection

In this course I have learned how to properly produce a college-level research paper, I am not completely perfect at it but I have a greater understanding. I learned how to cite and set up the works cited page with annotations. Advice I would give a future student who wanted to complete a successful research paper for ENG103 would be to focus on the course especially if its going to be a hybrid course. This course is something to be taken serious and in the long run you will gain so many skills that can help better you as a writer life long. I thought this course would be hard but after taking it I think it was overwhelming at first but I got into the hang of things and kept up with the work and realized the professor provided all the tools you need. I recommend to a future student of this course to use the tools given don't go searching the internet for resources that are horrible, we have data bases that can do all the work for you and are factual sources. One thing I would of done different was to not have changed my topic so late into the course but since I did I realized it helped better me now because the topic I changed to I related to as well and didn't notice how much I did till I had to look into other options for my paper after I got graded low from my first topic that was really to much for me to take on.

My Final Research Paper Game Plan

During the next two weeks, I need to work on my citations and works cited page to finish my research paper. I will be making these changes with the help of my preliminary draft revision the professor has graded, which resulted in a B. I think when I fix my citations and works cited page my paper might stand a chance of getting an A, I also will be improving my signal phrases and body paragraphs to make sure the paper is flowing the right way and keeping up with my argument. I will make the time to do all these provisions by clearing a day to just focus on my paper and maybe watch the film I'm doing my paper on again to see if there is anything I forgot or can contribute to my argument. Also I will go over my sources again and read completely between the lines so I know if there is something I missed and could use.

Close Reading of Film Stills in "Temple Grandin" from Course Film Stills Examples

Film Still One: "Temple Grandin"

In this film still it shows Temple Grandin inside her hugging machine and her new roommate walks in on her, the picture reveals Temple has weird and is doing something strange. The emotion we see if shes trying to calm down and then gets walked in on. From the back of the roommates head you can tell shes stuck and just looking at Temple and of course Temple doesn't think anything wrong or strange is happening because that's her way to relax. The director chose to show us what Temple looks like from the roommates point of  view. Through this picture I feel its different than the actual film because a lot is being said in just a still verses if you watched the clip of the part you would miss how people see Temple who is autistic. I could use this still to show people how the film portrayed Temple through another's eyes.

Film Still Two: "Temple Grandin"

This film still reveals the shock people have when they see that Temple is autistic and went to college and was so brilliant. The emotions in this still is so touching because it captured the scene beautifully, showing how people are admiring Temple and you can see the hope for there children that are autistic to be like Temple. The director gave the viewers this scene to show how incredible Temple is and its a deep acknowledgment to her through showing everyone elses shock and happiness. I could use this to show how in the end Temple got to make it through her final door and it shows her standing and following her destiny. This film still versus the clip of the scene is completely different because there is so much to look at while its paused and shows the reacts to Temple its almost has like people are shocked because they felt an autistic person could never amount to anything.

Free Write "Are Hollywood Films Realistic?"

I think when it comes to Hollywood films its mostly over dramatic and not very realistic. majority of films in Hollywood are not even based or have any authentic material for example Spiderman is known world wide for all the movies about the comic but none of it is real its based off a virtually impossible idea. I think given that some films in Hollywood are realistic in the biography and documentary aspects you can learn something from them, even films that are impossible in real life can teach you true things. In "Temple Grandin" there is so much to learn from the film that is real and true, since its based off of Temple Grandin herself we still get to see a realistic portrayal of autism that we definitely can learn from. I personally don't trust learning something from a Hollywood film because to me there not always reliable with their information. a lot of times movies in Hollywood are created to enhance our imaginations and give us a sense of more than life.

Blog Assignment #1

Research Paper Idea #6 -- Historical Research on a Scientist (and a Controversy)

For my research paper topic I'm going to be writing about Galileo Galilei and the Catholic church. My main focus is going to be on how by defying the Catholic church Galileo left his foot marks on science history and created a path for people to further his findings.

My first source I have read for my paper is an encyclopedia article from Gale Virtual Library titled "Science and Its Times" by Stephen D. Norton. This article provides information on Galileo's history and some of his theories. Its also about Galileo and some of his failures. The perspective of the author in this article is has if he was praising Galileo but also agreeing he wasn't always successful. The reason I chose this article is because it speaks on certain theories Galileo had and described them better then a few of my other sources did. It fits my research topic because its straight to the point and gives me the information I could use.

My second source I have read for my paper is a book from Cuny+, the title is "The case of Galileo: a closed question" by Annibale Fantoli. The chapter I have read so far is chapter 6: The trial and Condemption of Galileo. This chapter so far provides relevant information because it gives so much information on Galileo's convictions and how it lead to him being trialed. I couldn't really find a certain argument to the book so far but I will be checking through the chapters if I find any. the information from this book is going to help me formulate a lot of my paper accurately and in depth. the author spoke with admiration on Galileo. This source is going to be perfect for my research paper because it is a short book that has everything on Galileo I need.

My Research Topic

For my research topic I chose “Historical Research on a Scientist (and a Controversy)”. I plan on researching and writing about Galileo Galilei, I heard about him while taking Western Civilization II last semester and since then I been extremely interested in him. My main sources I will be using is going to be a few articles and a documentary. I will be able to gather a lot of information from the sources I chose to show my research on Galileo and on his conflict with the Catholic Church.
